The Official Trailer for the Moana Remake Just Dropped!

Do I still think ten years is too soon for Disney to make another Moana movie? Yes. Did I get excited to watch today's trailer drop anyway out of pure curiosity? Also yes. What can I say? I'm a sucker for all things Disney Princess. Although the new trailer had a lot more footage to offer than the initial teaser did, it was still extremely reminiscent of the 2016 animated classic and contained hardly any music or dialogue that wasn't pulled from it directly. You can check out the full trailer for the upcoming July 10th release below.

Hearing "The Rock" quote Maui's famous line, "You're welcome," is a good indicator of the irony behind Disney making this film. Like Maui, they are blissfully ignorant to the fact that nobody asked for a beautifully animated movie to be blandly replicated with live actors, not even a full generation after its premiere. Hearing the nostalgic notes and lyrics from the song "I Am Moana" did bring a wave of teariness to my eyes, but that's more of a testament to the impact of the original film. The imagery portrayed in the trailer is so reminiscent of it that it makes me want to go back and watch the original instead of this latest replica.

That said, the beautiful Polynesian landscapes, talented actors, and emotional score within the trailer share such a strong similarity to the original film that I think children seeing this movie as their first introduction to the characters and plot will probably have an amazing time. After all, the only reason this movie is being made is due to the powerful impact the original had on a generation. However, nothing is stopping today's little ones from streaming the same movie on Disney+ to experience it for the first time, so we are stuck in the same old remake rut yet again.

It's sad that the only princess movies we have to get excited about nowadays are the same as the ones we've already seen. There have been rumors that Disney is currently working on an original princess film, but these rumors are so cryptic and without merit that they could mean anything from another live-action remake to the rumored Mexican "Sleeping Beauty" film that may or may not still be in the works. At least the Moana trailer provides proof positive evidence that this movie is happening and will play in theaters this July.

In the end, the Moana live-action remake trailer has me nostalgic for the original, and that's probably the point. With stunning visuals and a talented cast, it's clear Disney is playing it safe. Will we ever get original princess content from them again? Stay tuned to The Princess Blog to find out if the rumors of an original Disney Princess movie ever come to fruition. Now I want to know what you think. Are you excited for the Moana remake, or hoping for something new? Let me know in the comments below!
