Sea Prince and the Fire Child Is the Most Magical Faery Movie You've Never Seen!

Image
It's been a rough decade for faery princess media . With the exception of the upcoming Winx Club reboot , the hyperfeminine fae aesthetic  has all but faded away into a lost relic of the 1980s and early '90s. Hidden in the depths of cinema history is a treasure trove of lost media that has been sealed away in the depths of old memories. Most studios don't have the motive or budget to reintroduce their old franchises to new audiences the way Disney does . One animated fantasy movie from the '80s that made a comeback a decade ago is The Last Unicorn , which premiered in 1982 with its tragic story, moving soundtrack, and beautifully dark imagery that came straight from the pages of Peter S. Beagle 's novel. On the Eastern front, a tonally similar anime movie came out in 1981 that I only learned about recently. Sea Prince and the Fire Child , also known as Legend of Sirius , is a visual and emotional spectacle of epic proportions from a time when creativity was celebrat...

Blogiversary Book Release!

Image
Can you believe I've been blogging about princesses for the past eight years? How time flies! I like to do something special each year for my blogiversary. A few years ago, I filmed a special music video . This time, it's something I haven't done in over five years . I wrote a new book ! That's right, folks. We're finally getting a new fairy tale novella. Titania's Reflection  is a combined retelling of "Fairer-than-a-Fairy"  and Shakespeare's classic  A Midsummer Night's Dream . It's currently available on Amazon in ebook, audiobook, and paperback formats. If you've enjoyed my other works in the past, you should absolutely check this one out! It's like nothing I've ever done before. Titania's Reflection  would not exist if it weren't for all the princess-related research I do for my blog. I first discovered "Fairer-than-a-Fairy" when I spent a winter reading all twelve of Andrew Lang's Fairy Books lookin...

Review: Rose Crown

Image
Rose Crown  by Nina Clare  is a retelling of "Snow White and Rose Red" from the multi-author All That Glitters series. Although I've lost track of how many books I've read from this series, this one was a lovely addition. It covers a lesser-known and rather odd story that doesn't get adapted frequently, and turns it into a beautiful, dream-like tale. The book takes place in the faerie and human realms and includes some of my favorite tropes, such as a lost princess  and mermaids . It borrows just enough content from the original fairy tale to feel like a true adaptation while adding enough original elements to feel fresh and new. The cottagecore and fae imagery throughout the book gives it an overall sense of wonder and nostalgia. Lily and Rose live in a cottage in the woods at the edge of the gateway between the faerie and human realms. Their mother has an unprecedented amount of magical knowledge for their humble upbringing and provides guidance to keep them ...

Are You Going to Scarborough Faire?

Image
After my last Ren Faire review , one of my readers suggested I check out the Scarborough Renaissance Festival  in Waxahachie, Texas. This is a much bigger and more popular festival than the Sherwood Forest Faire, but does that make it better? Though this faire offers some unique experiences that Sherwood didn't, the trip reminded me more of a stressful visit to a Disney Park  than a relaxing jaunt back in time. It was a three-hour drive to arrive at an enormous parking lot on a hilly field with a long walk to the front gate. While the castle tower entrances and dividers between the grounds were impressive, there were long lines for everything. Renaissance Faires are always fun experiences, so I understand why this one was so popular, but I prefer a more intimate and relaxing setting. For me, the biggest appeal of the Scarborough Renaissance Festival is the Mermaid Lagoon, a small walk-around area that costs an extra dollar per person to speak to two live mermaids and one merma...

Review: Pearlina and the Water Faery

Image
Over the years, I frequently referenced the mermaid stories by my long-time friend, Kae-Leah Williamson . Today, she has completed her longest mermaid book yet, Pearlina and the Water Faery , which is free to read on Wattpad! This is the latest story in her series of reimagined fairy tales that take place in undersea fantasy kingdoms of merfolk and talking fish. Pearlina  is a loose retelling of "Thumbelina"  that ties into the other books Kae-Leah has written on Wattpad and includes tons of Easter egg-style references to Don Bluth , Hans Christian Andersen, and "The Little Mermaid."  Over the time I have known Kae-Leah, she has grown exponentially as a writer, and this is her best work yet. When an ancient mermaid mourns the distant loss of her daughter, a prince's favor grants her a magic shell promised to grant her heart's desire. From the shell emerges Pearlina, a dark-skinned mermaid the size of a Barbie doll. Pearlina helps to care for her mother in th...

The Winx Club Reboot Released Its First Teaser!

Image
The upcoming reboot of Winx Club  has gone through countless delays in favor of bland live-action adaptations  and original animated shows , but a teaser has been released at last for this highly anticipated ninth season. It has been known for a long time amongst fans that the series has fully transitioned to CGI, which has never looked as good to me as the original 2D animation . However, the art form has come a long way since then. Rainbow S.p.A.  has improved its technique over the years to add more magic to its computer animation. The new season looks like an attempt to retell the same story the show released in 2004 with updated animation for modern audiences. There are positive and negative ramifications to this. While they aren't trying to change everything for the worse like Fate: The Winx Saga , it's still at risk of going in the same direction as Disney's live-action remakes , which change so little that it's better to just watch the original again. The teaser...

Review: A Wingless Hope

Image
A Wingless Hope  by Sydney Winward  is a retelling of "Thumbelina" from the Hope Ever After series , which supports Operation Underground Rescue  to help fight against child sex trafficking. This is the fourth book I've read from this series and the second adaptation  I've read of "Thumbelina." One reason authors tend to shy away from this story could be that it contains more high fantasy than the average fairy tale, which makes it perfect for Hope Ever After. All the books I've read in this series so far  plant additional magic lore into the fabric of the stories they tell, and this book is no exception. Where the original fairy tale was simple and doesn't always make sense, this version creates an entire culture around Thumbelina's race including two different types of pixies to explain why she was born without wings. Briar is a lost princess  whose flower seed was stolen away by a bird before she was born, causing her to grow up alone in th...

Story Saturday: The Lost Siren Song

Image
"The Lost Siren Song" Once upon a time, in the depths of a shimmering ocean, there lived a water faery named Kaia. Her translucent skin sparkled like the sunlight dancing on the waves. While her sisters were content to spend their days creating rain storms and typhoons, Kaia had always dreamt of singing with the sirens on the enchanted island of Anthemusa, a place where magnificent melodies filled the air. Among the sirens, there was one who captivated Kaia more than any other - Princess Su-Lynn. She possessed a voice so enchanting that when she sang, the sailors who heard her would fall under her spell, remaining by her side forever. Kaia admired many things about Su-Lynn, including how she effortlessly commanded the attention of the sea, and how she used her captivating songs to allure sailors and ensure the island's prosperity. The sirens on Anthemusa depended on the sailors they charmed to help maintain their beautiful homes, provide them with food, and gather resourc...

The Legacy of Sleeping Beauty: Is She As Passive as We Think?

Image
When I wrote my series of fairy tale origin posts , one major story that I skipped was "Sleeping Beauty."  It wasn't because I didn't care for this story as much as the others, but instead that it had a less complex narrative of changing with the times . In fact, this fairy tale is so simple that no matter how many updates modern adaptations incorporate, it is rarely altered so drastically from its roots to the point of being unrecognizable,  except in the case of a ridiculous 2016 horror movie called The Curse of Sleeping Beauty . Of all the movies I argued against depicting the theme of "Be pretty, girls, and things might work out,"   Sleeping Beauty  is the biggest outlier. It is probably for this reason that it is the only Disney Princess movie that did not get a direct live-action remake , but instead a creative reimagining with Maleficent , which focused on the more active villain than the mostly passive princess. Determining how much Sleeping Beauty h...

Ten Hidden Gems from the Fairy Books

Image
After completing over 400 fairy tales in Andrew Lang's Fairy Books , it's easy to get burnt out by all the alternate versions of stories we're already familiar with. The biggest draw of these books is the potential to discover new fairy tales that are as compelling and imaginative as the ones we tell our children. Though these stories are few and far between, I compiled a list of the top ten hidden gems after reading all twelve books. Since this list only contains stories I have never heard of outside the Fairy Books, The Blue Fairy Book is automatically disqualified since it mainly contains popular stories. I also didn't care for any of the stories from The Pink or Lilac Fairy Book s even though these are named after the two most feminine colors in the set. The stories listed below are ahead of their time in one way or another with brave princesses who rescue princes, spiteful fairies, and unique visual or story elements that stand out from anything Disney or any ot...

The Other Kingdom Is the Best Fairy Princess Sitcom You've Never Seen!

Image
The Other Kingdom  was a 2016 Nickelodeon sitcom that I learned about far too late . The final seconds of the show introduce a massive plot twist that promise a more compelling and story-rich second season that was sadly never mad. It's rare for such a strong fantasy world to exist in a sitcom and even rarer for a story about a faery princess  to live on Nickelodeon  instead of Disney Channel. The series gives off strong Sabrina the Teenage Witch  vibes, except that instead of an ordinary girl learning that she's magical, it's about a magical girl pretending to be ordinary. It builds upon faerie lore that is heavily inspired by Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream    right down to the main character being the daughter of King Oberon and Queen Titania. There are many other easter eggs to the play peppered throughout the show as well for observant viewers. The Other Kingdom starts out similarly to "The Little Mermaid."  Princess Astral is a faery pri...

Story Saturday: The Secret of the Forest (Once Upon a Time)

Image
"The Secret of the Forest" Hidden deep within the darkest depths of the woods was a magic portal that led to a land of great riches beyond a person's wildest imagination. These glittering jewels and gold nuggets were the lifeblood that allowed the faeries who resided there to live forever. In order to ensure that no one discovered this hidden paradise, the faeries were guarded by Princess Abeline, whose family was long gone due to the odd passage of time within the hidden land. The fae were all she had left, and she was determined to protect them with her life. Rumors had spread of the secret treasure, but no one knew the exact location of the portal. No one was more determined to find it than a treasure hunter named Jules, who sought a life of comfort in the wake of his kingdom's recession. He bravely traversed the darkest part of the woods, feeling his way through the trees after his trusty lantern burned out. When he saw a flicker of light, he was certain the porta...
