Is This Sofia the First's New Look?

Disney Jr. has been sharing sporadic updates on their social media to remind us that the upcoming Sofia the First sequel series, Royal Magic, is set to debut later this year. The frustrating part is that they are keeping the project very much under wraps, avoiding any artwork, plot, or production details, and focusing instead on nostalgic clips of the original show. This makes fans hungry for more information, causing them to turn to less reliable sources for any nugget of hype they can find. The Disney fan insiders delivered these coveted nuggets with The Disney Scope: Magic at a Glance, a Discord panel, which revealed some early leaks of Sofia's new design, along with potential new character and plot information about the upcoming show. Since this is not an official press release, all of this information should be taken with a grain of salt, much like the Mexican Sleeping Beauty project.

Sofia fans had a lot to say about this first look at the sequel series redesign shared on the DisneyToonz X account, and very little of it was good. The series is being animated by a different studio from the original show, forcing them to recreate her design with updated technology. Based on the image above, it's clear that an attempt was made. Her face, costume, and hair look accurate on a surface level, but her personality is another story. In the 2012 premiere movie and subsequent series, Sofia was presented as a sweet and humble girl from the village who had a great destiny unexpectedly thrust upon her. Here, her facial expression gives off a malicious smirk, or at the very least, one that is filled with superiority more befitting of her sister, Amber.

Additional leaks from the unofficial account revealed three new characters, who are allegedly Sofia's friends from her new school in Castle Merryweather, identified as Prince Zane, Princess Layla, and Princess Camila. Traces of their personalities can be interpreted from the leak, though nothing will be confirmed until the show's release this August. Zane appears to be a more effeminate prince than we've seen from Disney thus far. One of Sofia's new princess friends is holding up a wand, implying that she is skilled with magic like Lucia, another new "friend" character from Disney Jr.'s recent Ariel series. The unofficial description on X states, "The four compete in a year-long tri-castle challenge against Prince Kenji and Princess Simone, all for the Briar Rose Chalice," implying a season-long competition between Sofia and her new friends and their two new rivals, whose designs have yet to be revealed.

Since the show has not had an official promotional release to date, series creator Craig Gerber did some damage control on these early leaks through his BlueSky account, stating that the images are from an early internal animation test and that Sofia's design has been revised "at least 9 times" since then. Still, the early images give us a taste of what to expect from the series until something more official is released. Even though Sofia may look a little different in the final version, there's only so much they can change without losing the integrity of the original character. The personality revealed through this early artwork may imply that it's already too late. Only time will tell.

I'm looking forward to seeing all the final designs and details when the show premieres this summer. Now it's your turn! Are you glad this isn't the final design for Sofia the First: Royal Magic? What are you most looking forward to seeing in the sequel series? Are you more concerned about Disney changing Sofia's character design or her personality? Is there anyone from the original cast that you would like to see return in the new series, or are you more excited to meet Sofia's new friends and rivals?
