Review: The Soulless Slipper

Image
One good "Cinderella" retelling deserves another. The Soulless Slipper  is the second of three "Cinderella" adaptations by Abigail Manning . They say you shouldn't tell the same story twice, but when you can do so in such a unique and masterful way, then why not? The Soulless Slipper  is part of Abigail Manning's Fairmyth Chronicles , which seamlessly combines classic fairy tales with famous Greek myths. This book gives the story of Hades and Persephone a romantic fairy tale flair. When I was in a creative writing class years ago, I wrote a short story that retold this myth with the twist that Persephone was secretly in love with Hades and ate the pomegranate seeds of her own free will so she could stay with him. The Soulless Slipper  reinforces my girlish romantic fantasies and takes them a step further by weaving in the elegance and majesty of "Cinderella." Priscilla has been forced to spend most of her life toiling away in the fields for her ...

Review: Time Princess - Infinite Shimmer

Image
Infinite Shimmer is the latest visual novel in Time Princess . It was released in two parts and was well worth the wait. This is easily my favorite new visual novel this year. A great deal of time and effort went into making this an engaging story for long-time players of the app like myself. Infinite Shimmer is unique, beautiful, and insightful. It turns the science fiction genre, which is typically male-oriented, into something feminine and aesthetically pleasing, something that had never been done before except for the Barbie movie, Starlight Adventure , which was mediocre at best. When most people think of cyberpunk, they picture a bunch of depressed people walking around the remains of destroyed buildings carrying deadly weapons to pull on a dime wearing ripped leather and robotic limbs. Though this story takes place in a similar setting, it features an optimistic daydreamer who lives under the safety of a dome and dresses in glamorous pastel iridescent gowns that shift colors in...

Review: The Ocean Between Us

Image
The Ocean Between Us  by Cate Rowan  is a book I saw advertised on Facebook. It sounded more adult than the books I normally read, so I was going to pass it up. Then I saw that it had quite a few positive reviews. The concept of a Greek mythology mermaid romance intrigued me, so I decided to check it out. The book was short enough for something I was on the fence about and didn't take up much of my time. While it was pretty mature, it was a decent story for someone who is interested in paranormal romance. Of course, it goes without saying that I would not recommend this book to anyone below the age of 18. The Ocean Between Us  is about a mermaid named Mareisa who is cursed to live on a desert island as a siren to sink any passing ships with her uncontrollable song. To her surprise and delight, one of those ship's passengers survives and makes his way to the island, where he is no longer held by the grasp of her song and has the opportunity to get to know her as a person....

Review: Dress Up! Time Princess - Helen of Sparta Visual Novel

Image
When the developers for the Dress up! Time Princess app  asked fans what type of story they would like to see next in the game, an overwhelming majority of people requested Greek mythology. Many were expecting a classic myth such as Hades and Persephone . The developers of this game are always full of surprises and like to incorporate some history  into their visual novels or retell an old story in a new way . Therefore, it wasn't too much of a surprise when the latest visual novel turned out to be Helen of Sparta , a fantastical reimagining of the Greek legend about the most beautiful woman in the world who acted as a catalyst for the Trojan War . Don't worry, though. There isn't any war or bloodshed in this visual novel. In fact, there isn't a whole lot of anything aside from breathtakingly beautiful costumes. Before I started playing Helen of Sparta, I wasn't very familiar with the legend of Helen of Troy except that her beauty caused a bunch of thirsty men to k...
