Sea Prince and the Fire Child Is the Most Magical Faery Movie You've Never Seen!

Image
It's been a rough decade for faery princess media . With the exception of the upcoming Winx Club reboot , the hyperfeminine fae aesthetic  has all but faded away into a lost relic of the 1980s and early '90s. Hidden in the depths of cinema history is a treasure trove of lost media that has been sealed away in the depths of old memories. Most studios don't have the motive or budget to reintroduce their old franchises to new audiences the way Disney does . One animated fantasy movie from the '80s that made a comeback a decade ago is The Last Unicorn , which premiered in 1982 with its tragic story, moving soundtrack, and beautifully dark imagery that came straight from the pages of Peter S. Beagle 's novel. On the Eastern front, a tonally similar anime movie came out in 1981 that I only learned about recently. Sea Prince and the Fire Child , also known as Legend of Sirius , is a visual and emotional spectacle of epic proportions from a time when creativity was celebrat...

Blogiversary Book Release!

Image
Can you believe I've been blogging about princesses for the past eight years? How time flies! I like to do something special each year for my blogiversary. A few years ago, I filmed a special music video . This time, it's something I haven't done in over five years . I wrote a new book ! That's right, folks. We're finally getting a new fairy tale novella. Titania's Reflection  is a combined retelling of "Fairer-than-a-Fairy"  and Shakespeare's classic  A Midsummer Night's Dream . It's currently available on Amazon in ebook, audiobook, and paperback formats. If you've enjoyed my other works in the past, you should absolutely check this one out! It's like nothing I've ever done before. Titania's Reflection  would not exist if it weren't for all the princess-related research I do for my blog. I first discovered "Fairer-than-a-Fairy" when I spent a winter reading all twelve of Andrew Lang's Fairy Books lookin...

All the New Winx Club Transformations Have Been Revealed!

Image
Nowadays, reboots of nostalgic properties have become so commonplace that it's difficult to get excited  anymore. In the case of Winx Club , an animated reboot, albeit CGI, is more of a correction/apology for the horrendous live-action remake  that came out four years ago. Fate: The Winx Saga had none of the magic, visuals, or whimsy that made Winx Club such a beloved franchise. Rainbow SpA  issued a different type of apology last year in the form of a completely original magical girl series . Mermaid Magic brought back the charm and nostalgia of magical girl transformations, fantasy, and innocent romance that Fate was missing. Now, they are redirecting their attention back to their original fans by focusing on their newest iteration of Winx Club, which is allegedly coming to Netflix this fall. Although Rainbow launched a short teaser  for the 2025 Winx Club reboot late last year, there was very little revealed about what the girls would look like in their fairy for...

Review: Amphibian's Kiss

Image
Amphibian's Kiss by Lichelle Slater is the first ARC I received from an upcoming multi-author series of fairy tale retellings called All That Glitters . This entry in the sparkling series is a unique retelling of "The Frog Prince" with an organized magic system, a fairy realm , and lots of romantic tension. It does an excellent job of paying homage to the fairy tale while keeping the story fresh with surprises and drama. The main character is a witch living in a world where magic is banned, a plot thread that is near and dear to my heart . The book contains some fun animal sidekicks and a main character who is a vegetarian due to her innate ability to communicate with animals. Elowyn cannot forgive Prince Kaison for her mother's imprisonment, and who can blame her? It isn't easy being a witch in a kingdom where magic is illegal. Though Kai was once her best friend, El now has only her talking hedgehog for companionship. That is, however, until Kai finds himsel...

The Winx Club Reboot Released Its First Teaser!

Image
The upcoming reboot of Winx Club  has gone through countless delays in favor of bland live-action adaptations  and original animated shows , but a teaser has been released at last for this highly anticipated ninth season. It has been known for a long time amongst fans that the series has fully transitioned to CGI, which has never looked as good to me as the original 2D animation . However, the art form has come a long way since then. Rainbow S.p.A.  has improved its technique over the years to add more magic to its computer animation. The new season looks like an attempt to retell the same story the show released in 2004 with updated animation for modern audiences. There are positive and negative ramifications to this. While they aren't trying to change everything for the worse like Fate: The Winx Saga , it's still at risk of going in the same direction as Disney's live-action remakes , which change so little that it's better to just watch the original again. The teaser...

The Legacy of Sleeping Beauty: Is She As Passive as We Think?

Image
When I wrote my series of fairy tale origin posts , one major story that I skipped was "Sleeping Beauty."  It wasn't because I didn't care for this story as much as the others, but instead that it had a less complex narrative of changing with the times . In fact, this fairy tale is so simple that no matter how many updates modern adaptations incorporate, it is rarely altered so drastically from its roots to the point of being unrecognizable,  except in the case of a ridiculous 2016 horror movie called The Curse of Sleeping Beauty . Of all the movies I argued against depicting the theme of "Be pretty, girls, and things might work out,"   Sleeping Beauty  is the biggest outlier. It is probably for this reason that it is the only Disney Princess movie that did not get a direct live-action remake , but instead a creative reimagining with Maleficent , which focused on the more active villain than the mostly passive princess. Determining how much Sleeping Beauty h...

Story Saturday: The Fairy and the Witch

Image
"The Fairy and the Witch" Once upon a time, in a faraway kingdom, there was a princess named Amara. She was beautiful, kind, and clever, but she was also very lonely. Her parents, the king, and queen were always busy with their royal duties, leaving Amara with no one to talk to or play with. One day, Amara decided to take a walk in the forest to clear her mind. As she was walking, she stumbled upon a small cottage. Curious, she knocked on the door, and an old woman answered. "Hello, my dear. What brings you here?" the old woman asked. "I was just taking a walk in the forest, and I stumbled upon your cottage," Amara replied. "Well, you're welcome to come in and rest for a while," the old woman said, leading Amara inside. As Amara sat down, she noticed a beautiful flower on the old woman's table. "What a beautiful flower. May I have it?" Amara asked. The old woman smiled. "Of course, my dear. But be warned, this is no ordinar...

Ten Hidden Gems from the Fairy Books

Image
After completing over 400 fairy tales in Andrew Lang's Fairy Books , it's easy to get burnt out by all the alternate versions of stories we're already familiar with. The biggest draw of these books is the potential to discover new fairy tales that are as compelling and imaginative as the ones we tell our children. Though these stories are few and far between, I compiled a list of the top ten hidden gems after reading all twelve books. Since this list only contains stories I have never heard of outside the Fairy Books, The Blue Fairy Book is automatically disqualified since it mainly contains popular stories. I also didn't care for any of the stories from The Pink or Lilac Fairy Book s even though these are named after the two most feminine colors in the set. The stories listed below are ahead of their time in one way or another with brave princesses who rescue princes, spiteful fairies, and unique visual or story elements that stand out from anything Disney or any ot...

Anime to Watch in the Winter 2023 Season

Image
Lately, it's been much easier to find new princess anime  series than  Disney movies . Every three months, a slew of new anime shows are release, most of which blend fantasy worlds with reality , and there's almost always at least one new series about or related to princesses. The winter season has just begun, and I have discovered three shows that fall into what I would consider the princess genre. Since I have only watched the first episode of each, I can't speak for the quality of these shows to determine whether they will be worth sticking around for until the end the season, but I can say that this new season has a large variety to offer no matter what type of anime you enjoy. First up is The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady . This is a yuri (girl love)  anime that is way more fast-paced than Revolutionary Girl Utena , despite both shows having "revolution" in the title. In the first episode, the main character, Prin...

The Other Kingdom Is the Best Fairy Princess Sitcom You've Never Seen!

Image
The Other Kingdom  was a 2016 Nickelodeon sitcom that I learned about far too late . The final seconds of the show introduce a massive plot twist that promise a more compelling and story-rich second season that was sadly never mad. It's rare for such a strong fantasy world to exist in a sitcom and even rarer for a story about a faery princess  to live on Nickelodeon  instead of Disney Channel. The series gives off strong Sabrina the Teenage Witch  vibes, except that instead of an ordinary girl learning that she's magical, it's about a magical girl pretending to be ordinary. It builds upon faerie lore that is heavily inspired by Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream    right down to the main character being the daughter of King Oberon and Queen Titania. There are many other easter eggs to the play peppered throughout the show as well for observant viewers. The Other Kingdom starts out similarly to "The Little Mermaid."  Princess Astral is a faery pri...

Review: The Enchanted Rose by R.M. ArceJaeger

Image
The next book on my "Sleeping Beauty" recommendation list  was The Enchanted Rose  by R.M. ArceJaeger . This book is an adaptation of both "Sleeping Beauty" and "Beauty and the Beast" in equal parts. After reading the description, I wondered how Beauty could fall in love with the Beast if she was asleep, but the book wisely saved her sleeping curse until the end. While "Beauty and the Beast" adaptation overpowers much of the middle section of the book, the author still manages to expand on the "Sleeping Beauty" elements by making a good chunk of the opening section about the lives of the fairies, how the princess and prince were cursed as babies, and the kings and queens' reactions to the curse. I must also commend this book for being extremely thorough. It doesn't waste a single page dragging out an individual character's storyline. Instead, it fleshes out the emotional arc of everyone involved equally. Like most "Sle...

Netflix, Are You Kidding Me Right Now with This Winx Reboot?

Image
It's official. Hollywood is dead . If the Mulan  remake wasn't bad enough, even our non-Disney childhood favorites are being turned into gritty soulless live-action shadows of their former selves. Remember when things like this used to be a joke? Those days are over. Now we have hyper-realistic Riverdale spinoffs that aren't actually realistic because they feature teenagers with superpowers. They are just realistic enough that all of the whimsical fantasy elements that we loved as kids are now gone, but not so realistic that they are beyond things like vampires, werewolves, or seances. What sort of world are we living in when a show about faery princesses  does not even portray its fairies with wings? I suppose you can argue that maybe they didn't want to reveal the wings in the trailer, but isn't that the entire point of Winx Club ? See for yourself. Does this look the Winx you remember? So yeah, this is Fate: The Winx Saga , which is coming to Netflix on Januar...

Review: The Fairy Princess and the Unicorn (a.k.a. Bayala: A Magical Adventure)

Image
This movie is a bit of an enigma. The animation is more beautiful than it has any business being, but the script feels like something that came straight out of a 1980s marketing team solely for the purpose of selling toys. And that appears to be exactly what it was . It has the look and feel of a Barbie Fairytopia movie  from a bygone era . While it's nice to know that there are still movies like this being made, would it be too much ask for them to be made better? The Fairy Princess and the Unicorn  is an extremely misleading title. The movie was not about a single fairy princess but, in fact, many winged elf princesses, most of whom were sisters. A unicorn appeared in one scene for about ten seconds and had absolutely nothing to do with the plot. The movie was apparently renamed from the more fitting title of Bayala: A Magical Adventure , which would have been a perfect fit for it. I guess their marketing team was worried that a movie named after a world no one has ever...
