Disney Jr. Releases New Sofia the First Shorts!

With Sofia the First: Royal Magic coming to Disney Jr. and Disney+ later this month, Disney will be sharing more glimpses into the upcoming sequel series to give fans an idea of what to expect. Today, they premiered two original shorts entitled Sofia the First: Magical Friends on their YouTube channel to give us a taste of the upcoming show, which premieres on May 25th. The shorts introduce new characters and provide a closer look at the updated animation style and designs. Check them out below to meet Sofia's new animal friends, and one of her new human friends, Princess Layla.

In the first short, Sofia and Pepper the puppercorn introduce us to the Palace Pets at Charmswell School for Royal Magic. The animation in this short is a little jerky in comparison to the smooth and elegant movements of the original show. Pepper comes off as even more rambunctious than the already energetic Clover from the original series, who is nowhere to be seen in these clips. Sofia reveals the layout of her new school, which includes separate castles for the Three Good Fairies from Sleeping Beauty, which works nicely as a nod to the original series, but considering that Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather already had a prominent role at Royal Prep, it gives off the impression that they have a monopoly on all the royal academies in the Ever Realm.

All three castles at the Charmswell School have their own royal pet, which is a great marketing strategy for selling toys. However, having both a unicorn and a "puppercorn," a combination of a puppy and a unicorn, comes off a bit redundant. There's also no explanation as to why the other two castles have full-sized adult animals, while Sofia's has a much smaller puppy-sized one. This could be a throwback to the original series, in which Sofia was the only student at Royal Prep who rode a miniature flying horse, Minimus, when she participated in racing challenges with the other students.

The other Magical Friends short is about Princess Layla, one of Sofia's three new friends at Charmswell, with the other two being Prince Zane and Princess Camila. In this short, Layla grows butterfly wings and embarks on a precarious flight around the school grounds. Flying was a popular theme in the original series, with a variety of spells and magic-enhanced items that gave the characters flying abilities in numerous episodes. Most of these were one-off storylines, but Layla's butterfly bracelet appears to be a permanent fixture in the new series. This means we can expect lots of new storylines involving flight, a popular fantasy in girly media such as Winx Club.

The Sofia the First: Magical Friends shorts give us a glimpse into the updated animation style and new characters of the upcoming Sofia the First: Royal Magic series, including deeper color palettes, frenetic movement, and breaking the fourth wall (although that might be exclusive to the shorts). The introduction of Sofia's new friends and the Charmswell School's unique setup promise an exciting new chapter in the Sofia the First franchise. With flying, magic, and royal adventures, it seems like Disney is ready to keep the magic alive for young fans. Craig Gerber said how even though he and the show's team wrote the shorts with Nicole Dubuc, the whole "talking to thr audience" thing was done by the marketing team, who produced the shorts.
