Once upon a time, a young oracle named Eden lived in a thriving kingdom. Every day, people would line up at her door to tell their fortune with little regard for the toll it took on her health. Oracles lived notoriously short lives as each vision they conjured caused them to convulse with pain and slowly drain their life force. As such, Eden lost her parents at a young age and survived on her own by sharing her unique ability with the people. She was used to the pain that the visions brought and enjoyed it when she could help to prevent bad things from happening.

There was one client in particular who she liked seeing most of all, and that was her kingdom's very own Prince Adam. Ever since the first prediction she made for Adam, he grew concerned with the pain that came with her power and stayed by her side holding her hand until she felt better. He often visited her just to see how she was doing without asking for any predictions. One day, Adam came to Eden at the direct command of his father, who was about to marry a princess from a foreign land who would become the kingdom's new queen. Though Adam hated forcing Eden to use her powers, his father felt it was very important to the kingdom's future to make sure nothing went wrong with the ceremony.

Eden happily obliged her favorite customer but was unprepared for the shock of what came next. As Adam squeezed her hand comfortingly, a vision of a monstrous scaled face appeared before her and breathed fire over the wedding procession. She felt the heat of the flames as though they were real and trembled at the sound of people screaming in a panic and running for their lives. When she opened her eyes, Adam was pulling her close and looking at her with deep concern.


Eden explained to Adam the disaster that she foresaw in his future, but she didn't know where the dragon came from or why it attacked the wedding. If he wanted to know more, she would need to speak to the king. Adam wasted no time in making preparations to bring Eden to stay at the palace. Eden tried to tell him that it was too much and that she didn't need to stay overnight just to make a prediction for the king, but Adam wouldn't hear of it. He wanted to ensure that she was comfortable, well-fed, and well-cared for after seeing the way she suffered with her last vision.

Eden paid her respects to the king and took his hand to get a better vision of his wedding day. Through the king's eyes, she saw his future bride pull out a large egg that she had been hiding under her voluminous wedding gown. The egg was as hard as a rock and speckled with colorful spots. She recognized it as a dragon egg. Then the same fearsome dragon from her other vision flew in an angry rage at the newlywed couple and blew harsh flames at them and everyone in the audience, burning many of them alive. Eden felt these flames even more intensely than the first time. Somewhere in the back of her mind, she could hear Adam calling to her, but she wasn't able to bring herself back to the present to respond. Then everything went black.

When Eden opened her eyes again, she was lying in the castle infirmary and being tended to by a doctor. She made a grunt, and Prince Adam was instantly by her side. She didn't know how long he had been there, but it seemed like he was waiting for her to wake up. He told her it had been a week since she had made the prediction, which meant the wedding was that evening! There wasn't much time. Eden told Adam everything she saw and apologized for not being able to warn him sooner, but he assured her that he was more worried about her health than finding out the source of the dragon.

Once Adam learned about the dragon egg, he had the guards search his future stepmother's chambers, and sure enough, they discovered the speckled rock-like egg. The wicked princess was brought to the dungeon for questioning, and they discovered that she was sent by the kingdom's enemies to pretend to fall in love with the king and form an alliance so she could summon a dragon and destroy the land. She was sentenced to execution for her crimes, and the egg was brought to a secluded cliffside where the dragon could recover it without harming anyone.

Now that the kingdom was safe again, Eden was ready to return home and continue her duties as oracle, but Adam would not hear of it. He deemed her a hero for saving the kingdom and preventing him from the fate of a wicked stepmother. With all of this in mind, it was easy for Adam to convince his father to accept Eden as the princess and future queen if she would have him. Adam confessed that he was in love Eden for a long time and hated to see her cut her life tragically short with her fortune-telling. He assured her that if she became a princess, she would never need to make another prediction again and would live out the rest of her days in peace. Eden could not believe her good fortune. This was better than any vision she could have predicted for herself. She never imagined that her life could take a different path from that of an oracle. With a full heart, she agreed to marry Prince Adam and lived out the rest of her days happily without ever feeling the pain of her visions again.

Beautiful! It reminded me a bit of the plots of some Korean webtoons where the girl with powers stays with the prince of the kingdom hehe.

Princess Fashion

I've been seeing several viral posts recently about historical fashion lately. One was  a gallery of women's fashion every year from 1784 to 1970 , and another was a video re-enactment of how women got dressed in the 18th century . These got me thinking about some of my favorite princess fashions. Though princesses are not known to be  historically accurate , their fashions drew inspiration from many different places, and history is one of them. If you take a look at the way fashion has evolved over time, you can get an idea of which parts inspired the princess movies and which parts were altered. Something that surprised me in the re-enactment was how many pieces were assembled on a woman to give the appearance of a single dress. Today, most dresses are a single piece, but historically, gowns consisted of a corset bodice and a large skirt with a crinoline underneath. Review: Disney Princess - The Concert

Update:  I just received confirmation from Christy Altomare (Wow!) that she will be attending the fall leg of the Disney Princess concert tour and was unable to attend the first few months because she is performing in a new musical at the Paper Mill Playhouse  and that Anneliese has always been part of the concert. Review: The Spanish Princess/White Queen Trilogy

Yesterday, the Starz network  released the series finale of The Spanish Princess , concluding  The White Queen  trilogy of miniseries that began in 2013. Based on a book series called The Cousins' War  by Phillippa Gregory , the trilogy covers the women who stood behind the men in power in the English monarchy from 1464 to the 1530s, preceding the first two sovereign queens, Mary and Elizabeth. The White Queen , The White Princess , and The Spanish Princess  grant us a rare opportunity to see what life was like for medieval monarchs. Watching them reminded me of why I prefer the fairy tale versions of royalty. Those stories do not contain the gory deaths, gruesome births, and invasive politics that historical dramatizations like these exemplify. In fact, I had very little interest in watching the second season of The Spanish Princess until I watched some historical videos and learned that the king that Catherine of Aragon was married to was none other than King Henry VIII, who was

Review: Mountain of Dragons and Sacrifice

As a member of the street team for the Sacrificed Hearts series , I have been eager to read these books about unexpected romance from many of my favorite authors. The series plays on the trope of sacrificial maidens  who learn that their "captors" are not what they appear to be and grow to love them. In other words, they can be interpreted as loose retellings of "Beauty and the Beast,"  one of the most beloved love stories. The first book in the series, Mountain of Dragons and Sacrifice  by Tara Grayce , is a quintessential starting point for this series. I recently reviewed Netflix's Damsel , which had a similar premise but was marred by modern agendas and stereotypes of what it means to be a princess today . In many ways, this story is the opposite of Damsel , taking a damsel who believes her life will be threatened by a fearsome dragon before learning she doesn't need physical strength to defeat it and that what is inside her heart is already enough. Review: Time Princess - The Underground City

Where Infinite Shimmer , the last visual novel in Time Princess , encompasses everything romantic and girly in a seemingly misplaced cyberpunk setting, The Underground City: Stirring Shadows does quite the opposite. Although the dystopian world of The Underground City is so similar to Infinite Shimmer that it could have easily been a spinoff about a different character living a different life, Sera's circumstances are not nearly as appealing as Aurora's. This visual novel takes everything a player would expect from the genre instead of twisting it into a Barbie-like setting . While this is great for fans of dark gritty dystopian worlds, it feels out of place for such a bright girly game as Time Princess that features a fairy who gives the protagonist the power to become anyone. While not appealing to my personal tastes, this novel demonstrates the game's versatility to players who enjoy all types of stories. Underground City players are transformed into Sera, a tragic figur

One Hundred Princesses for My 100th Post

Today is a major accomplishment for me. I started this blog 100 days ago, and I've managed to write a new post in it every day since then. Some of the topics were easier to come up with than others. I also had to go back and edit some after the fact due to poor proofreading. Speaking of which, I'm really sorry about the disastrous short story from my first Story Saturday post . The whole thing was written on my phone on the way to a Mermaid Art Show event in San Diego, so I was a little distracted. I promise to put more effort into future Story Saturdays, which should be easier now that I will no longer be writing new posts every day. Don't worry, though. Review: Damsel (Netflix)

A year and a half after Hulu's  The Princess , a film about a generic fairy tale princess picking up a sword and saving herself, is owned by Hulu, Neflix decided to take on their own version of the trope with  Damsel , a film about a general fairy tale princess picking up a sword and...saving herself? Though these two films share similar themes, the primary foe in Damsel  is a mythological dragon instead of a greedy conqueror, giving Netflix's take on the overdone plot more of a fantasy feel. However, the sweet taste of magic is as fleeting as the film's promise of happiness to its sacrificial brides. Like The Princess , Damsel  is a gritty action flick with little levity. I found The Princess  enjoyable enough for what it is, and Damsel , though generic, has its moments as well. Review: Unicorn Academy (Netflix)

As soon as I saw the previews for Netflix's new animated series, Unicorn Academy , I couldn't get over how similar it looked to Princess Gwenevere and the Jewel Riders . Teenagers forming magical bonds with unicorns to save the world from evil? Yes, please! With a Jewel Riders graphic novel on the horizon, this is the perfect time to revisit that premise. Unicorn Academy is loosely based on a book series of the same name  that got picked up by Netflix and recently aired its first season. The premiere movie and successive eight episodes follow six unicorns and their riders on their quest to protect the magical realm from the evil Ravenzella, who performed reprehensible acts to previous generations, including the father of the main character, Sophia. The show contains a lot of teen angst and drama as well as rainbows, sparkles, and magic. Review: The Princess Twins of Legendale

For those of you who aren't savvy in the world of underground Hollywood, there is a studio called The Asylum , whose sole purpose is to create low-budget imitations of popular movies in the hopes that an old granny will forget her glasses while shopping and buy one on DVD for her grandkids, thinking it's that big blockbuster movie they're always yapping on about. When they set their sights on an upcoming release from a major studio, they rush to get their imitation out before or around the same time as the one they're mimicking so they can pretend that they came up with the idea first. The Princess Twins of Legendale  was not produced by The Asylum, but it feels like it easily could have been. In actuality, it was produced by a modern toy company called MGA Entertainment , which is famous for making Bratz and  L.O.L. Surprise dolls.
