As Disney Princess - The Concert continues its national tour, there are smaller venues making their own special magic across the nation. I was pleased to learn via Facebook that my new castle is located within driving distance of one such venue. Cedar Park High School is performing a show called Princess Tea this weekend, which they have apparently been doing for the past fifteen years. What a magical tradition! The show features high school choir students performing as various princesses, princes, and sidekicks from animated movies that are not entirely limited to Disney. This year's cast included Cinderella, Ariel, Belle, Megara, Rapunzel, Anna, Elsa, Anastasia, and Fiona on the girls' side and Prince Charming, Jaq, Gus, Flounder, Prince Adam (the unofficial fan name for the transformed version of the Beast), Flynn Rider, Dimitri, Donkey, and Olaf for the boys.
Considering that this was a local show, I was extremely impressed with the production level that the cast and crew put into it, especially after attending an "official" Disney Princess concert a few weeks ago. There were plenty of activities for princess fans of all ages to see and do from the moment I stepped into the lobby. A small cardboard castle was placed up front and center to greet attendees followed by a pink Instagram-ready photo background with a flattering ring light, stands selling wands and crowns, and friendly volunteer hosts in Mickey Mouse ears who were ready to greet party guests and show them to their tables. Each table was named after a different princess, each seat included a complimentary goody bag filled with goldfish, popcorn, and other goodies. During the intermission, the hosts came around and served glittering cupcakes with sugar roses on top. I wish Disney Princess - The Concert had put this much effort into making their guests feel welcome and hyped up for the show!
Cedar Park High Schools' Princess Teas have had various themes throughout the years such as The Royal Academy, Aurora's Sleepover, or Elsa's Snow Ball. This year's theme is A Winter's Ball, so of course, the show started with Anna and Elsa doing a brief rap from Hamilton. The corresponding songs throughout the show were woven together by a loose narrative about the princesses getting ready for a ball without realizing that their princes and sidekicks lost the key to the storage closet containing the decorations. Most of the performances were split between songs and skits from the girls and the boys. I was surprised to find that the boys in the show had some of the funniest antics and best singing voices, though, of course, I was still entertained by the princesses in their detailed high-quality costumes and hoop skirts. It was a treat to hear some obscure princess songs that aren't owned by Disney as well, including "I Know It's Today" from Shrek The Musical and "To Be a Princess" from one of my personal favorites, Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper. You can listen to some of these performances below.
Of course, the show included plenty of Disney hits as well such as "How Far I'll Go," "I Won't Say I'm in Love," "Let it Go," "Almost There," "When You Wish Upon a Star," and "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" The 10-minute intermission was preceded by the rest of the high school choir performing an impressive medley of classic Disney villain songs. Like any Disney Princess event, many little girls in attendance were dressed up as their favorite princesses. They received special attention at several points during the show such as when the princesses came into the audience to dance with them. They even did a makeover contest at one point! This show had a lot more guest interaction than many official princess shows I've seen in recent years, which is something that Disney could really benefit from bringing back. My favorite performance of the afternoon was "Almost There" from The Princess and the Frog which had excellent harmonizing and choreography among the princesses.
An added bonus was being able to watch this show on National Tell a Fairy Tale Day. If you've been following my Facebook page, you've probably seen me share numerous posts throughout the week for Once Upon 2022: A Celebration of All Things Fairy Tale. This is an annual event in which indie fairy tale authors come together to share games and tidbits about their books, culminating in the biggest fairy tale book sale of the year. If you want to refresh your princess reading list or grab some of the books I've reviewed here for free or deeply discounted, check out the fairy tale sales that will be happening all weekend long. The best princess entertainment does not always come from billionaire corporations. It comes from passionate people with a desire to make others happy. Be sure to check out your local and independent princess contractors. You might be surprised by what you find. Let me know in the comments if you have discovered any hidden gems near where you live!
Well, this is the kind of events I'd like to attend...Or organize. How many girls out there would like to attend a "Princess academy"? I'd like to know...
That's mostly what they do, but I've also seen princess party companies hold public events from time to time like dinners or dances or shows that you can buy tickets to. Sometimes they also partner with other companies to host events. Check your local companies and see if they have anything going on soon!
As soon as I saw the previews for Netflix's new animated series, Unicorn Academy , I couldn't get over how similar it looked to Princess Gwenevere and the Jewel Riders . Teenagers forming magical bonds with unicorns to save the world from evil? Yes, please! With a Jewel Riders graphic novel on the horizon, this is the perfect time to revisit that premise. Unicorn Academy is loosely based on a book series of the same name that got picked up by Netflix and recently aired its first season. The premiere movie and successive eight episodes follow six unicorns and their riders on their quest to protect the magical realm from the evil Ravenzella, who performed reprehensible acts to previous generations, including the father of the main character, Sophia. The show contains a lot of teen angst and drama as well as rainbows, sparkles, and magic. Although Unicorn Academy features an entire school full of unicorn riders training to be protectors, it only focuses on the six students liv
Yesterday, the Starz network released the series finale of The Spanish Princess , concluding The White Queen trilogy of miniseries that began in 2013. Based on a book series called The Cousins' War by Phillippa Gregory , the trilogy covers the women who stood behind the men in power in the English monarchy from 1464 to the 1530s, preceding the first two sovereign queens, Mary and Elizabeth. The White Queen , The White Princess , and The Spanish Princess grant us a rare opportunity to see what life was like for medieval monarchs. Watching them reminded me of why I prefer the fairy tale versions of royalty. Those stories do not contain the gory deaths, gruesome births, and invasive politics that historical dramatizations like these exemplify. In fact, I had very little interest in watching the second season of The Spanish Princess until I watched some historical videos and learned that the king that Catherine of Aragon was married to was none other than King Henry VIII, who was
Today is a major accomplishment for me. I started this blog 100 days ago, and I've managed to write a new post in it every day since then. Some of the topics were easier to come up with than others. I also had to go back and edit some after the fact due to poor proofreading. Speaking of which, I'm really sorry about the disastrous short story from my first Story Saturday post . The whole thing was written on my phone on the way to a Mermaid Art Show event in San Diego, so I was a little distracted. I promise to put more effort into future Story Saturdays, which should be easier now that I will no longer be writing new posts every day. Don't worry, though. I will still keep everyone informed of the latest princess news and review all the new princess movies and specials. Without further ado, in celebration of my 100th post, here is a list of 100 princesses with all of the posts I've made about them (in no particular order). Thank you so much for reading my blog. 1-11:
Computer animation has a complicated history. When it was first introduced around the mid-90s, it was amazing and innovative. Then, as it slowly started to take over our favorite princess movies and shows, it felt more like an invasion of art. Michael Eisner did not with this when he claimed that traditional animation was no longer relevant in the early 2000s. Today, the medium has advanced so much that it blends seamlessly with live-action movies, blurring the lines between animated and live-action features. Most modern sci-fi movies lie somewhere in the middle. Which medium do we prefer for our princesses? It's undeniable that traditional animation came first, starting with Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937. Today, it's rare to see an animated feature that's not made by a computer. Disney is taking advantage of this technology to transform all of their animated princesses into flesh and blood actresses with mixed results. Pictured above are th
I've been seeing several viral posts recently about historical fashion lately. One was a gallery of women's fashion every year from 1784 to 1970 , and another was a video re-enactment of how women got dressed in the 18th century . These got me thinking about some of my favorite princess fashions. Though princesses are not known to be historically accurate , their fashions drew inspiration from many different places, and history is one of them. If you take a look at the way fashion has evolved over time, you can get an idea of which parts inspired the princess movies and which parts were altered. Something that surprised me in the re-enactment was how many pieces were assembled on a woman to give the appearance of a single dress. Today, most dresses are a single piece, but historically, gowns consisted of a corset bodice and a large skirt with a crinoline underneath. This was something I also noticed about Disney's theme park princesses . Though they look like one dr
The twelfth and final installment in The Swan Princess franchise was aptly titled Far Longer Than Forever in tribute to the romance theme from the original film . As some fans have pointed out, the title accurately represents how long the filmmakers have been milking the series for almost 30 years with one awful sequel after another. Some of the later sequels had potential , but this movie did not do them any favors as a finale. Written as a direct follow-up to A FairyTale Is Born , the eleventh film in the series, Far Longer Than Forever ties up some loose ends after a tedious and forgettable journey that fails to acknowledge many characters and plot points that had been introduced over the course of the other eleven movies. Despite the obvious nod to the famous song that this latest installment uses as its title, A FairyTale Is Born seemed more suitable as a conclusion because it contained more tributes to the original film. Far Longer Than Forever makes the mistake of focus
In recent years, it has become trendy for everyone to criticize the Walt Disney Company as much as humanly possible. In many cases, it is justified , but these criticisms are unfounded regarding Wish , Disney's tribute film to their 100-year animation legacy. This is a movie that provides Disney fans with everything they have been asking, begging, and wishing of the studio for years. It is a beautifully animated original story that is all heart with no pandering and is neither a sequel nor a remake . Since the movie is also an homage to the Disney animation of the past, it is packed with subtle Easter eggs that only true Disney fans will notice and are not obnoxiously in your face like some of their previous attempts with Wreck-It Ralph 2 or Chip'n Dale: Rescue Rangers . In fact, this movie was so entertaining that it got me thinking about the characters on a deeper level than the writers may have even intended long after I left the theater. As previewed in the trailers ,
Princess Power is a new animated Netflix series for preschoolers based on the celebrity-endorsed picture book Princesses Wear Pants . I would like to state up front that I am definitely not the target audience for this series, but there has not been a new American animated princess series in at least three years, so we're doing this one. To be fair, one of my favorite shows of all time, Sofia the First has the same target age group, but I would argue that series was written with a wider breadth of audience in mind because it spent so much more time than it needed to on worldbuilding, music, and character development. Princess Power is a lot more obvious about its demographic, and that's fine, but as a result, it has little to offer for adults, parents, or older kids. Princess Power focuses on four girls from the "fruitdoms," whose names all start with the same letter as their kingdom's fruit. Penny comes from the Pineapple Kingdom, Rita from the Raspberry Kingdo
The holiday season has begun, but like many other things this year , it is a mere shadow of its former self. That's why I was so pleased when one of my readers referred me to an animated version of "The Nutcracker" that I had missed during my childhood. The Nutcracker Prince is by far the most accurate version of E.T.A. Hoffmann's "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King" that I have ever seen. After my overwhelming disappointment with Disney's The Nutcracker and the Four Realms , I thought that the Barbie movie was the closest I'd ever get to an accurate feature based on this classic fairy tale. I was wrong. The Nutcracker Prince is an animated film released in 1990 with a surprisingly impressive cast of voice talent. Sadly, there's no chance of seeing it on Disney+ any time soon because it was distributed by Warner Brothers , one of the only major film studios that Disney does not own (yet). However, it is free to watch on YouTube for those o
It's no secret that Princess Gwenevere and the Jewel Riders was my absolute favorite cartoon as a kid. There are few others who share this passion with me as the show is still obscure even in an era of countless nostalgic reboots , so when I first heard that Mad Cave Studios was partnering with 41 Entertainment to make a series of Jewel Riders graphic novels , I was skeptical. A few days ago, my cynicism was laid to rest when a press release revealed the cover art and release date for the novel. It's really happening! On May 28, 2024, the first issue of the brand new YA Princess Gwenevere and the Jewel Riders graphic novel will be available wherever graphic novels are sold. It's even available to pre-order on Amazon right now! Take a gander at the gorgeous new official cover art below that stays true to show's color palette and art style while adding a modern manga-inspired flare. I am absolutely in love with this new Magic Girl anime-style cover art that features
